Hand painted furniture debut

Beautiful accent table that I found at the local GW...great solid piece in maple that I refinished and painted the harlequin pattern and fleur de lis on top, then distressed the rest of the piece.  Love it!

  1. Hi, I found a very similar table. I want to do a harlequin pattern to the top but I don't know the easiest way to do it. Any advise? Also, I primed it & painted it, then distressed it....but the white primer shows through. Do you prime your furniture 1st? How do you get the brown colors to show through the distressed area. I went over the part that I sanded with a brown marker & wiped off the residue...I guess it looks ok??? This is my 1st piece to redo but I have big plans for more pieces that I have bought to repaint. Yikes!

  2. I don't normally prime my work. I sand it and use Milk Paint, it adhears nicely to wood and then you can sand down to the natural wood and stain the edges. Chalk paint does that as well, and you can use a trick of putting elmers glue on spots, letting it get tacky, painting over it, then let it dry for about 20 min and wipe it off carefully with a napkin...that shows more of the wood underneath. Good luck!
